The Chronicle PUBLISHED DAILY. LEVIN. WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER. 8. 1915. THE BARNARDO HOMES.

"We are justly proud of the nay m which our Old Boys have responded to the call of.-King and Country." In these words Night and Day for October refers to tlie fact that in the present War probably two full battalions ol Old Barnardo Boys are fight, ing for King and Country. There is some uncertainly about the real-num-ber, for many Canadian emigrants originally sent) out by the well-known Homes have joined the colours without apprising Headquarters. It is believed on good grounds that over 2,000 are wearing kliaki or navy blue; nearly 1,600 names are actually know;]. That is a great thing to bo truthfully said by any institution, and it is peculiarly significant when said by all Institution which, like Dr Barnardo's Homes, is engaged solely in the saving and up-bringing of children who are distitute. ill lorty-nino years these Homes have passed over 81.000 boys and girls through their hands, and over 7,200 are under their care daily. War time presses with serious effect upon their resources, an.l ,ac winter comes on, tlie pressure is sure to deepen. The Homes are a voluntary agency, without State aid, and their endowments would not I j themselves maintain the work for thr.'s days in the year. Yet, but for its aid, how many additional paupers and criminals would be thrown upon the rates and taxes! Any of our readers who wish for further information send for this issue of Night and Day to 18, Stepney Causeway, London, E.. and read of tho numerous activities that circle round tho Barnardo Homes.
