The Levin Borough Council has granted Albert Leader permission tc erect a signboard across the lootpath,'at a height'of twelve feet in Queen-street.
Approval of the plans lor rc-erect-iou of the Albiou Hotel, Shaimou ,was g;iven last; Friday,* at yio quarterly meeting of the Otaki Licensing' Committee. The plans -provide for" some. 20 roonis. The new building is designed on up-to-date, lines, and will ,>e a great, improvement to the town ot •Slianon. The plans and specifications ion tor the new building are in the hands or* Messrs L. G. West and Son. architects, of Palmerstoii North.
OMr B. R. Gardener, Totto Olerk, has been appointed treasurer to -the Levin Borough Council in place of "Sir P. W. Goldsmi'th, who has resigned.

A letter from Mr V.' T. Hitchings was received by the Levin Borough Council last night asking tor a reduction in the charge of £■! ior water lor the working of a lift in his premises in Oxtord-street. The. letter was referred,.to the waterworks committee for report,. The resignation of Mr 1. Hook, borough road overseer, who nas enlisted, was received by the council last night and accepted, his salary to be paid up to the-'end of the year. The resignation takes effect from the 25th inst. The nowlyi olected mayor, iMr I! Blenkliorn, was installed in office la.st night. Tli© Town Clerk (Mr Gardener) said he was pleased to see him occupying the position. He would be only too pleased to help him in every way and wished him a. most successful ferm. Ho was quite fitted *t> carry out the duties faithfully and impartially. Councillor France, the senior councillor, "read the declaration, which was signed by Mr Blenkliorn, and formally introduced him to the council. They had a good man in the chair, and he was sure he would do tho office credit. Mr Blenkhorn thanked them cordially for their welcome, and noped that the present cordial relations tha| existed between all of them would continues.

The replies were read at last night's meeting of the Borough Council. The Standard management stated that owing to tl'O increased cost of printing paper it had stopped all free papers.
