Tau inoome per mile has been £497 11s 0.1 and the expenditure £489 'Is lid. Those figures are set out m the latest (oiu'-weokly table publislied in The Government Gazette. The revenue in the tour-weekly poriod to 16th Octobor was £333,403 8s Od, by comparison with £274,5(32 9e (id in the like period ol 1914. To date of 10th "Oetobor, the earnings since Ist April, last £^,2(Ji,i7 c J 15s lldi, as against £2,111, 012 7s sd. Judged by these results, the work of the new general manager already in having a- beneficial influence or. the State business. The extra expenditure necessitates! in earning the
extra moneys works out at a little over £25,500, which in effect reduces the percentage of expenditure by nearly four per cent; namely 70.50 tor the current term as against /4.28 in 1914. There has been only ono section of raif"W'uye wlieron losses have occurred. The Kaihti section lias cost 105.26 to run. in the South Island all the sections have been profitable, though the Picton section comes close to the* line with an expenditure ol iib.33 per cent. The Lake "Wakatipu steamers (winch are run as an adjunct to the rail-ways) show a loss in working, the percentage ol expenditure Ijcing 107.74. This total is even greater than that ol the IUI4 period, •which worked .out at 101.43 per cent. Against this, however, should be set down the fact that many railway tickets on tTie 'South Iβland main trunk line are taken oui uy, excursionists to the Cold takes who might not be travellers'but for the fact tJiat the Government provides facilities for the making ol tours in the 'Lake \\ akatipu district. It is a noticeable fact that the pecoentages ol expenditure on the two main truuK lines both show decreases. The expenditure cn\ the -North Jelandi main trunk iiae and branches has fallen Irom 75.53 per cent, to 74.44 per cent, and that on the South Island mam trunk iines and branches from 75.90 per cent, to 74.4-1 per cent. The most profitable line o! all was the Black Diamond line (Westport) with an expenditure of only -1D.13 per cent, which figures is nearly li per cent, less than the expenditure on the same line a year ago. Tfie results as a wJiole show that lor an additional expenditure of £24,500 the railways yielded an extra revenue of £147,000.
