—* NOTEti ON THE'ASHOUST MEETING Ashuret-Pohangina Itacing du&, atter an intorval of four or live years, resumed racing yesterday. The meeting was held in* perfect weather j the public attended in large numbers/ and racing was excellent. Altho.ugh the turf of tho course :had become a bft rough through disuse, it seemed .to pos< sess a springiness that made it to tho liking of the racehorses. This was shown by the racing X'eoords. Tho six-furlong races both were run in luiin 15 2-ssccs, and the five-furlong races took Imiii 1 4-?>see, andi lmin 2eec respectively: good going for hacks. The open six furlongs was won by a good quality mare in Lady Micldliton, who gave Hushabyo lib weight and a beating. Martlet /with Bst 31b up, beat a,dozen other runners in the Flying Hack (.six furlong) in a manner that stamped her as coming to the top 'Ji her form. The Ashurst Clip was contested ,- y uight runners. His Eminence, after i getting into a "mix-up ,, amongst the I runners, came away nicely in " the i straight, and landed the race from tfunI ting - and Sicily, who filled. , the places. I The winner was ridden by a Levin boy ! —O. Carmont. Maniaroa, who started ! first favourite,- seems to be a bit backward. He ran well for a mile, but died out at the money end. The Open Welter (seven furlongs) fell to Combustion, who reproduced hifi Levin form iinmistafceably. He was followed home by Lady LndoV) and Tangiwai iu that order. Black Lupin was backed for tin's race as if he had walk-over in front of him, but the result was a bad lot down-for ihis connections. Evidently he is a horse that pleases himself—a- b'nd fault from a backer's viewpoint. Trinlis nncl Pomoroy (the latter a Levin-trained horse) got tho dividend! places in the last nice. They we're the outsiders of the field. The meeting was a most auspicious one for the newly-resuscitated club, and no doubt the Ashurst meeting will resume ite old place in public popularity. .A fair number of Levin and Shannon •people attended the meeting. They left Pnlmomton at 7.15 p.m.", on the rotnrn journey and roachedi Levin at p.m.
