The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Levin Borough Council was Held in the Borough Chambers last evening. There were present: The Mayor (Mrs B. R. Gardener), Councillors H. ii. France, M. Fosella, J. Harvey, JL\ M. Herrick, S. Jones, A. Dempsey and C. Blenkhorn.

The streets commfttee reported that it ha.cl inspected the streets recently and found things in tair order. It recommended that a chain of central Oxford street be tarred and sanded as an experiment.

Councillor France said he thought the idea a .good one. and though 't would cost money he considered it a step in the right direction. Tf a success they coufd extend it. Ho thought in regard to stock on the roads that the road overseer should be made responsible For keeping-them clear. The Jfsyor thought that the latter questiowshould be given more consideration. He thomrht it rather hasty to deal with it right away. Tie did not think that the proposal would improve matters. Councillor Blenkhorn remarked that it would be better if the ranger was connected with the borough office by telephone, and the ranger- then eould he notified of any. complaints re stock 011 the roads that might be laid by residents. The Mayor considered the suggestion re the telephone a good one. Ho moved that the streets' committee go into the matter thoroughly and bring down a definite scheme tor keeping tho streets clear of stoelc. Councillor Blenkhorn seconded this. Councillor .'Herrick supported the •motion and it was agreed to. A letter was received from the Town Clerk, Mr P. W. Goldsmith, tendering his resignation, ho having been appointed clerk to the Horowhenua County Counoil. The Mayor moved that the resignation be acccpted with regret, and "that this council place on record his long and faithful services to the borough, as :t token of the npprecintion of the ability in which lie has shown in carrying out his duties as Town Clerk for nearly ten years, and wisTi liini success in his new position." Speaking to the motion the Mayor said that no one regretted Mr Woldsmith's resignation more than he did. They had been associated since the inception of the borough* and.he (Mr Goldsmith) had taught him a great deal about municipal matters. Tt was a great honour to Mr Goldsmith to be chosen out of 75 applicants. Though glad to know that Mr Goldsmith was improving his position, they all regretted his resignation. He had treated all councillors the same in giving advice and assistance. He felt sure that they all would join him in wishing Mr Goldsmith all success. Councillor Blenkhorn seconded the motion, and wished Mr Goldsmith sue cess in his now position. The Horowhenua County Council was gaining the services of a valuable officer. Councillor France wished, him every success and congratulated him on his .success. Mr Goldsmith returned thanks to councillors for their kind remarks. He was not going far from them, and always would assist thern if necessary.
