Already one gift towards the equipment has been received, a parcel of slippers lrom Mr Nicholas, of Hath street. It is hoped that a' eprosentntive gathering of Levin woinon will be at Monday's meeting, to give the movement an effective local start. .Shortly after midnight on Friday an alarm of iire was sounded in Levin. 11 was the first opportunity for a thorough tost of the new firebell, and from the way it was rung people believed that a serious fire was in progress, hut in the proved event it seen that the need was more for :■ dentist than a fire brigade, the alarm having been due fo inflamed stumps in a Queen street paddock near the butter factory. The arrangements made a few -weeks ago by Mr G. A. Hurley, organiser for the Boy Scout movement, for the formation of a troop in Levin district are making satisfactory progress, and the enrolling of members of the troop, its division into patrols, and the -inpointnient of leaders wiJl be made today, when Mr Hurley will'be in Levin. Mr A. Mason, of the' Weraroa Experimental Farm, has been appointed scoutmaster, and as he has had previous experience in a similar position, the boys should make good progress under h'.s supervision. It is understood that •about forty-five boys will be enrolled. Particulars of an alleged attempt to poison eight soldiers from the Leigh district of Lancashire have reached Leigh. Whilst the soldiers were waiting for a train at'Crowe for London a civilian approached and asked them to have a. cup of tea. as lie was paid by a society to make soldiers aK comfortable as possible whilst awaiting traias. Each had tea. but on reaching camp in Sussex a few hours later became Tory ill. and the doctor found them suffering from carbolic acid poisoning.
