[Pitt riIESS ASSOCIATION.] EATAL EIRE AT CHiUSTOHUIICH. Christchurch, This Day. A Fatal fire occurred at Eendalton at 10 o'clock yesterday, when a now two-storeyed bungalow in India's road as destroyed. The victims of t/he fire were Mrs Cookson, aged abjout <30, and her grand-daughter, aged two years, the daughter of Mr E. W. Freeman, a survoyor. Mrs Cookson, a well known resident had been living with her son, Mr J. ii. Cookson, who left the house at 7 o'clock when everything was safe. Tho house was full of suffocating smoke when a neighbour discovered the blaze, and an attempt was made to remove the furniture. None of the helpers knew at- that time that thore was anybody inside the house and they only had been at work for a little time when the flames Croke through with a roar and the wliolo building was enveloped. It was not till Mr and Mrs Freeman and Mr Cookson arrived that it as ascertained' that the house was occupied, and t<hen it was much too late to attempt to effeet a rescue. The origin of tho outbreak is a mystery. ART UNIONS
At a monster carnival meeting held at Mataroa last night tho following resolution was unanimously carried:— "That the Government be asked to amend the law so that all articles presented to patriotic societies mav bo raffled or disposed o! by art union.
