Jacob John Astiey, 32, younger brother ol Loud Hastings, pleaded "Guilty" to various charges of forgery at (Brighton and was sentenced to AS mouths ini'prisonhient. The Judge said that in view of the prisoner s ill-neaitn he would not impose a sentence of ham labour. It was (stated that prisoner was convicted ol fraud in iSouth Africa in L\Jl<i. H<? afterwards served in tihe -satal Light House, cam© to Jidigland, and was gazetted second lieutenant iti the iNortii- Somerset leomanry in dune. Two ua/j later his commission was cancalled, Ho opened an account at .CluiAjg Cross Bank with his outfit ullowauce and advance pay. He α-eceived a book of 25 cheques and on his first 10 cheques withdrew lilie amount paid -in. The remaining 15 cheques were presentcJ in payment of various accounts, the prisoner's practice being io draw a cheque for an amount greater than that of the amount ho was paying and to receive the balance jn money. I'ho total value of these cheques was £122. It was suggested on the prisoner's behalf that he was subject to attacks of malarial fever. The family wero willing to help make good tihe money obtained and the prisoner himself would also probably help. The Judge said he was satisfied tihe prisoner was a thoroughly frauduent person,; ' T^|
