County Engineer's Report
For the past month the Cimnty Engineer (Mr J. Malcolm) reported on the state of the roads and bridges throughout the different ridings as lollows. — To lloro Killing. All the roads ill this riding are in 1 airly good order with tne exception of the one in the -Otaki uu.rge, and it i> giving a great deal ol trouble, as it is continually slipping. i understand tne settlers are to have some dilliculty m getting up the necessary supplies; they say the carriers are airaid of the slips. I hardly know what to suggest only it will not do to allow tilings to remain as they are; the roadman is about half his time removing slips. The cement pipe culverts are now being laid in the south drain and at lladiield. i he roadman reports that the Paotawa drains are all in good order.
Otaki Hiding. .Nothing is being done 111 this riding but the usual maintenance. JL'lie loads are all lair with tlie exception of tlie South Manakuu which needs metad. i will try to get Mr Close the contractor to linish tlie metalling contract during tlie ensuing month, it tho weather keeps favourable. I have not .been able to get on -with the new road to the cemetery yet as the Town Hoard has been unable to get the title lixed tip. lam afraid 1 will have to call fresh tenders for the work it me are not allowed to go on soon as tin. 1 contractor says it may upset something else for him if he cannot get at it.
"Wirokino lliding,
The metalling of the i'oxton road to Row's corner is now completed. 1 expected the Wanga road 'would be done today, but the rain may have kept 't back; tho Koputaroa section and the piece from How's corner to the uoundary of the xjorough oi Levin is still to do. Tlie contractor for metalling Fotts's road is losing no time; when the formation is dry enough he is there. There is nearly one-third of it cut I liave put in tne 42-inch pipes iu the Koputaroa road. 1 hape they arj large enough to take tlie water at all times, as it looks a good job. Jhe construction of the Tararua load extension will have bo taced at once. i
understand there are several settlers depending on it to get their milk to the creamery this year, and 'although the taking of the road under the Public Works Act has been very near completed . there are no ararngements made about the raising oi the money lor the payment of the land, and for constructing the road. 1 expect it will require from £1000 to £1200. What ; <s to be done about itr*
Tokuimiru Riding,
There is nothing doing in this riding bu; the usual maintenance, and it is being well looked alter. All the metal contracts are now finisheu. and if it is a good season 1 don't think there will be much more needed for a long time unless some is required to replace the metal that has been 'washed off the new Makerua road with the last floods. 1 have not' been over it since the last floods, but 1 understand there is «ome washed off. 1 have, however, a nest og|', to provide against this contingency; after next summer there will be nor more of it as the metal will get over grown, and the vegetation wi'l keep it.
