Extraordinary Operation
News lias readied Kilwinning Irom Libby, Montana, of a remarlvabie opera lion performed with the aid of a dull jack knife and two teaspoons by Dr il. W. Auld, a native of Kilwinning, at present practising in Libby. A lumber-jack named led Sherman, who was under the influence of liquor, endeavoured to swallow nail' a. pound of beef steak without masticating it, •with the result that it stuck in ilis gullet, and lie could neither swallow it nor got it back. When Dr Auld arrived life was almost extinct. The doctor asked for a knife from the bystanders, grasped the man's windpipe with his left hand, and 1 sank the knile into the windpipe. The knife was so dull that it took three efforts to got it through. Immediately air has drawn into the lungs the colour began to leave the face, and there was relief. With the teaspoons the doctor got a man to .keep the air passage open until he returned from his surgery with proper instruments, with the aid of which he soon had the man beyond danger.
