Otaki News

« FROM OTAKI MAIL.

A meeting of those interested in resuscitating the Otaki Gentlemen's Club was held in the old clubrooms, adjoining the Jubilee Hotel., on Saturday night last, when i)r Hutinvaite presided over a v good attendance. It was decided to resuscitate the old club, and to lease the old clu brooms, which were offered by Mr Mcßeatli on liberal teVms. The following officers were duly elected:—President, Mr W. H. Snucox; vice-president, Messrs* M. Carkeek and \V. Tonisitt; Hon. Secretary, Mr C. 11. G. Hedditch ; Treasurer, Mr C. L. Hartmann; Committee. Messrs W. B. Smith, E. Hopkins, S. W. Bapley and Fleming, and Dr Hutinvaite. The club will commence operations almost immediately. ft is pleasing to note that practically not a case of sickness (except measles contracted from other patients) has occurred in the camp at Waikanae, but, on the other hand, those who were in indiiferent health on arrival there, speedily recovered. Private Henry Raymond Bevaii (next of kfu. Mr William Bevan, Otaki, uncle) is reported as iiaving been wounded in the hand at the Dardanelles. So far as we have been able to ascertain, no 'Henry Raymond Bevan went to the front from this district. In all probability the soldier referred to is either David Bevan or .Matthew Bevan. As the result ot arduous labours, Mr A Satherley, secretary of the Bowlers' ball committee, has himselt sold nearly JLMO worth ol tickets for the function to be held on Friday night at Otaki. Several others have also disposed of tickets, and it is evident the affair will be largely attended. The reinforcements (the '-'Unlucky Seventh," as they are known, oil account ol having so many shifts) at Waikanae struck camp on Thursday, when some record tent work was done. Canvastown. from the bugle' call to dismantle, was razed to the ground, and everything packed in a very brief space of time, the men all showing great proficiency in this direction. A Wellington section were awarded honours for best time, etc. Late at night the men were entrained lor Tauherenikau, a large number expressing regret that they had to leave such a glorious climate, and kind friends who had helped make their stay so pleasant. Many voted Waikanae an ideal place for a camping ground, and officers considered nothing better could be found i i the Dominion.
