Tht following report on tho cost oi tho various work done in tho Levin Borough last year was submitted to tho Borough Council by we Town Clerk Mr 1 , . W. Goldsmith on Monday mghc:
{Summary of Expenditure upon Stress Footpaths, water-races, watorwulxs Reserves, Gardous, etc., tor year enact iS.ist. -March IUIS.
Tin total amount of expoiidit u\> as i'or tin. , year just ended is, iJl'2oo 15s td. i> this suin £320 lls was expo*:. .-a ih June and July iiJi-1, and the balance jLu'cJ -Is lUd was spout last mouth just before tlio close of tlio Imauciui year. Undoubtedly the crushed metal is niuch better and decidedly more lasting t<han the pit metal now available, and the expenditure in the direction of crushed metal is a wise one, still it is evidently more and more apparent that the best results from tne work will not bo obtained until a steam or motor roller is used on the roads. Tho vorli of tarring the footpaths inus been proceeded with as far as supplies would allow and tho length ol tarred paths is slowly extending year oy year. The work done near the railway station has greatly improved tho 'general appearance and the public convenience oi that portion of the town. Some Boroughs are now treating their mam streets with the tar-and-sanding process, and are proving it to be a very good substitute for asphalt, especially where the formation of the road is good, that is suitably graded and in good order for the ton , . The work upon water-races boundary roads, •eserves, culverts etc., are a-uout normal and call for no special comment. Ihe waterworks expenditure continues to bo reasonable as in previous years. By comparison with the previous year it will be found that there is a considerable increase in the expenditure as a whole—and this is accounted lor by the large quantity of crushed metal used. It must also bo remembered that there is a slight increase in tho cost of labour, and team work cannot be obtained so cheaply as formerly. A new grader has been purchased at a cost of £2-1 8s od, and a water cart nas been lent to tho Borough for a- tune, and doubtless the owners will be willing to accept a- reasonable offer for tho cart For the information of the Council, the expenditure is clarified as tollows ;—
