(SHANNON DEFEATS WERAROA. On Saturday afternoon thirty footbaall players, fifteen from Shannon and fifteen from Weraroa, met on the Levin park domain, and spent about an hour and a quarter sliding up and down after a wet and greasy lootball. H was the sorb of afternoon on which the unexpected happens In football. Tries were scored when euch seemed unlikely ; when a goal seemed a certainty the ball wont off at an angle ot 45 degrees, and players, when just albout to do something clever, sat down with surprising suddenness and where they liad sat was a concave spot. In the first half oi the game Weraroa scored two tries one of which wae converted. They also had several shots at the goal but the ball was too greasy lor good kicking at goal, though, taking everything into consideration there wae some good line kicking. Throughout this half Weraroa showed to advantage, and at Half time the score was Weraroa 8, Shannon nil. In the second half Shannon eet out to fill up their side of the scale, and at once put Weraroa on the defensive. So effectually did they hold the Weraroa team that it was not* until about fifteen minutes before the close that they got over the half-way line and theu they wore returned without undue delay. Meantime Shannon, with dribbling rushes, scored three tries. in the gathering darkness Weraroa made a great attack and got right to the Shannon line, but tailed to score. It was their last chance; the rebound brought the game back into Weraroa half and just on time Shannon scored a goal from a free kick and the game ended: Shannon 12 points, Weraroa 8. Mr J. O'Connor was xeferee.
