THURSDAY, JLNL 17, 1915. NEW ZEALAND 11NANOU. J-.iiteet estimates uf the- lotal trade oi : New Zealand (overseas) during 191! show that our exports exceeded the imports by a value ol over £5,100,000 Tin's is nearly £300,000 below New Zealand's previous best record (£o, -10425U in 1910), but with the exception of those figures 1914 stands well ahead of all previous records. A signiiicant fact about the 1910 surplus of live million pounds sterling j s that the surplus for 1911 fell i<i less than £200,000. In part this would be accounted for by the book-keeping entries to credit of New Zealand made in 1910-11 and Great ■Britain's phenomenally increased export shipments of foodstuffs and manufactured articles during ion. Rfcr fc w j[[ bo interesting to observe whether these conditions will be reproduced in 1915 as a result of our surplus ror the year ended December last. With cognisance of tho abnormal conditions of trade resulting from the war, we do not expect to see these conditions reproduced; though it is likely that ou,r own heavy expenditures for outfit, upkeep and reinforcement of New Zealand soldiers abroad will necessitate tho maintenance of heavy exports to maintain an equalising credit against fresh loans and increased charges for inter- i eat.
