Queen Carnival

MEETING OF LEVIN COMMITTEE. Levin's Queen Carnival Committee met last night Mr W. jlughee presiding. There was an attendance of about thirty. The Otaki entertainment committee wrote that it would be happy to arrange a visit to Levin uy its concert party and to receive a visit from the Levin concert party. Mr W. J. Howell wrote from Paraparaumu that there were so many other avenues in. which local residents were helping the patriotic, funds that he did not think there could be any great amount of support given to the Queen Carnival. Mr G. Wateou telegraphed from Waikanae that a committee was hard at work there iu Miss McKegg's interests. The Mayor of Levin reported that in company with Mrs .Gardener he had visited Ohau, Otaki, Shannon and Kopii'taroa during the past week. Thejr would visit Foxton, Paraparauniu and other places on the Bth or 9th inat. Good results attended their visits to each centre. Palmerston they found bent upon having their own carnival, at a later date, and tlfo citizens were lukewarm in regard to the present Queen Carnival.

The secretary reported that the committee had decided that this county would not be represented in ' the procession afc Wellington on Thursday, ue there were many difficulties in the way. The treasurer reported that a sum or £227. 4s Od was in his hands. With the exception of one cheque the whole amount was made up~bf small subscriptions. A committee of ladies was set up to '(Consider the matter of providing a dress for the Manawatu Queen. It was reported by the secretary that the cost of the dress was not likely to exceed £40. On the motion of Mr Kirkcaldie, seconded by Major Burlinson, the sum of £50 was fixed as the limit of expenditure. An amendment moved by Mr Brown, seconded by Mr Young, that tho amount be limited to £50, was lost, and the motion carried. The committee consist*; «f Mesdarues Gardener, Herrick and Goldsmith, together with Miss McKegg. intimation was received that a concert party of nine would eojiio up from Wellington next Monday w&iing, under Professor Cartbton, ifevo an entertainment in iLevin in aid of the Queen Carnival Fund. It was resolved that the motor car to be competed for in a guessing competition be alloted to the person who estimates nearest to the total number recorded for the whole of the Queen Carnival candidates. Mr Young moved and Mr R. V. Brown seconded a motion that the competition close on June 24th at 9.ni., instead of the 21st, an fixed originally. This was "agreed to. On the motion of Mr Kirkcaldie, Mr Hammond Murray was apopinted as special canvasser to interview farmers Mr Jvirkcaldie said Mr Murray tvas "our 17in. gun" (laughter) an 3 he would do excellent work. Mr Kirkcaldie undertook to place hie motet car at Mr Murray's services for a day Mr G. Kingdo.n seconded the motion which was carried.
