LOCAL AND GENERAL
The case of H. ,]. Richards, uf Levin,, versus G. Potts, 01 Koputaroa, (a claim for commission on a sale of land), listed for hearing at I'almerston .Supreme Court this week, has been settled oiiit of Court by defendant paying a sum of money in settlement. ft seems probable that a case presenting some interesting features will come before the Supreme Court on a date yet to be fixed, though it has already been set down for hearing (says the Otago Daily Times). The plaintiff is Miss Violet Campbell and the defendant the Rev. IVter Hray. and the action is for alleged breach of promise of marriage, damages being fixed at l'5()0. with a further claim of ClB5 for presents given by the plaintiff to the defendant in view of a marriage taking place. The statement ol claim sets out that, in 1907. at Dunodin. the parties agreed to marry one another, and that, about May 6'th. of last year, defendant married another lady. Defendant, who is described as belonging to Wellington, denies having promised to marry the lady, and "denies that the gifts werr made in view of a promise to marry her. He repudiates the idea of any such promise being made. Tile circumstances of the death of an Onehunga resident from on overrsose of chlorodyno were tlie occasion for a strongly expressed oprnion by D'r "W. I Bruce, of Onehunga. to the City Coroner. Chlorodyno, lie pointed out was an exceedingly powerful poison, containing chloroform, morphia, and prussic acid, and yet the sale of. it, by chemists or by grocers, was quite unchecked. Tt certainly should, lie thought, be placed in the first schedule of poisons so that every purchaser would be required _to sign for it. Tn the case under notice the victim had apparently purchased three bottles at once. There has been some suggestion that the issue of regulations is contemplated to deal "more satisfactorily with the whole question of proprietary medicines which are poisonous.
