In Shrewsbury (England) prices tor bread and otlier staples ol life are not much increased through the war. A letter received by the Rev. H. T. .Stealey from his brother by this week's mail gives some interesting details. The 21b loaf of bread is 3d, English ■butter Is Id to Is sd. egg« 10 for Is ; meat l()d to Is per Ib. cheese lid to Is per Ib, potatoes Is for 161bs. Coal has. been incrca«ed to 30s per ton. The letter concludes: "I forgot the pig: Bacon Is and Is 2d per Ib: Home cured (English) ham Is and Is 6d per Ib."
The intercessory service held on Levin Park Domain yesterdav drew a
large attendance. The Friendly Societies—Druids. Rechabites, Foresters and Oddfellows—the Levin Brass Band, the B«y.s' Training Farm Band, and the Salvation Army Band took part in the procession wliich was marshalled at Weraroa by Major (i. M. Burlinson, and to music of the bands marched to the domain. The service was an impressive one. Accompanied by the Salvation Army Band those present sang several hymns and joined in prayer led by Captain Brown. The Rev. H. T. Stealey read passages from the Bible and the Rev. A. (J. Randerson. aml the Mayor (Mr j>. R. Gardener) delivered brief addresses. At the conclusion the benediction was pronounced and all «an s the "National Anthem. An apology was received from the Rev. W. H. E. Abbey, who was absent because of ill-health.
Mr James McKenzie, ITnder-Socre-triry of Lands, will retire on superannuation at the end of June. Mr Mackenzie filtered-the service of the Otago Provincial Survey Department in 18<37. and in 1872 he been me an assis-tant-surveyor in Wellington Province. In 187-1 he was made district surveyor and in 1879 chief draughtsman for (lie Wellington district. He was appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands in ! Auckland in 1902. and was afterwards transferred to Weflington in a similar position. Subsequently he was made. .Surveyor-General, and when Mr Strjiuclioii retired recently Front 11 io position of flnder-Scerelary for Lands, Mr McKenzie was .selected to replace him. - Dominion.
