Kapiti Island

(By Wanderer.;

The fishing season has set in an<l judging from the fleet of trawlers off the Island the high price of meat Ins treated a demand for the' tinny tribe. The Lac* o , Aberdeen of the Watson line, looking spick and span from trunk to keel, with fresh paint and varnish, wa.s the firnt to drop aneli* r in the fishing zone, quickly followed by the Saucy, Riki, Commodore and the Queen -Captain PVately. Ther.e also arrived a large launch from Pareniatta. 1 learn others are on their way from Wellington and Foxtoii. The weather during Easter week was boisterous, cold and disagreeable, yet numbers of picnickers chartered launches for fishing, etc. One large party from Shannon evidently wished themselves on terra firm a an soon* as the boat got into the choppy water: they were business men if one might judge by the way they cast up their accounts. The Royal Flster conveyed Mrs Webber and party to Otnki and had n rough trip both ways. The Governor (Mr Bennett) line been on a visit to the Umpire City no the Union Jack has not been flying from the flag pole at Government House in the last few day. The potato crop here has been remarkably fine this year while the water-and rock-melons would take some beating. Easter hoidays are over and the school re-opened on Tuesday. An application has been made to tho Postmaster-General to subsidi.se one of the launches to carry a weekly mail to and from the Island. Often it is ten or twelve days -oiv we see a paper or get letters, so it is to be hoped matters will be improved now. This would be an ideal spot lor a sanatorium—far before Otaki. Now. if Mr Gardener, who takes such an interest in hospital matters, were to visit here he would find every requirement needed for the conßiimptive, and as the Government propose taking over the

remainder of tho Island, doubtless they would be willing to set apart a spot for a sanatorium. This is worth considering. At present we are having beautiful won titer, ealm and bright.

Another consignment ni fat wether* is being sent over from .\IV Webber's run this week f- Otaki.
