MEAT EXPORT SEASON
ENDING IN NORTH ISLAND. | 1 to- <•' Us- !»I *•gi; i• : ev,-r kiio s i: : lie : ' • of i in dus try is now approaching its ciose in the North Island. It is understood that in the South operations are still fairly extensive, but here, from Hie producers' point of view at least, the season is nearly over. If the companies were able to get their cold stores cleared sufficiently to work at halfspeed. they might carry on at halfspeed for, perhaps, a month longer, but this would exhaust supplies. Practically all the works are now blocked. However,, il is tho general opinion thai by the end of the present month the companies will get sufficieiiF relief to allow them to go slow, and to "imtinne go slow. but. of course, many things may happen to prevent the expected ships from coming along. Although there has been a drought in ' parts ol the North Island, entailing either total loss of stock or the sacrifice of stock not in prime condition, the season has been a good one for producers. The price lor hit stock has been high, and now it must remain high, approximating to the prices paid by the Government for meat for the armies. Now that the drought has broken, the demand for More sheep is very strong, and price* for certain classes of them are now nearly a- good for fat stock. An unusually large quantity of meat of second quality ois gone through all works wTiieh draw from drought-stricken area*, but as against this it is a fact t' ;:t t'"!' 1 have received nearly as much lor ond-quality stock as they received l i' prime stock last year.
