The distance l'j miles, nas covered in 2.38 3-5. On Friday next at 8 o'clock in the evening the Horowhenua Fruitgrowers' Association will hold its ordinary month ly meeting iu ill- D. Smart's rooms Oxford Street. A provincial newspaper contains the following offer in an advertisement by an enterprising trader: "Any person who can prove that my tapioca con- " tains anything injurious to health will - have three boxes of it sent- to him free of charge." In Melbourne a publican was fined i' 2 for pusting in front ol his hotel a false report that the Jiuiiic had been torpedoed in the Channel with Australian troops aboard. Others were fined tl for circulating the report. A rather good story comes from the Taranaki district. A farmer in one ol the outlaying district* employs Native women to weed his crops of carrots and mangolds every year, but this season was faced with the question of lionising them. Not to be beaten, he hitched ''Dobbin" on to a new pig bouse, drew it close up to his own residence, md washed it well- and 10, a fine habitation! The Maori women exclaimed, "Kapai. no housework!" and thoroughl.v enjoyed their up-to-date accommodation house! Hut they never knew it had heen occupied before. That a farmer's wife is able to make i< good bargain is an old "saw," but the one that took down a ".shrewd" dealer recently, deserve** to rise to the top of her profession—remarks a conscienceless exchange. A dealer had looked at some stock and asked, "What will you take for that beast?" "Oh. that bull, it's rising two years. £-1 will doJ" was the meek reply, and the animal changed hands. The dealer (giving the animal a long pedigree) had no difficulty in selling the best to a settler hut .fudge of the latter'* astonishment, a week later-, when he discovered his purchase was' a steer! Enquiry also elicited the fact that the farmer's wife didn't know either. The people of Levin are reminded ol the public meeting called for to-night in the Century Hall to discuss the tpiestion of entertaining the troopers, «bo will be in camp at w'eraroa next week. It has been suggested to take advantage of the presence of the troopers and hold military sports and this will be brought up for discueeion at to-night's meeting. 'Hie camp will be uf great benefit to the residents of Levin, and it is hoped that there will be good muster this evening and something arranged to make the stay of the troopers as pleasant as possflile. Another item for discussion will be the formation of a life saving society for Levin. On Saturday evening a large gathering took place at the Arcadia Hotel .u bid farewell to the .Levin men who nave joined the contingent' which will oe leaving (shortly to reiuloreu wie main Expeditionary Force- at the front. Hall also spoke to the toast and the men severally responded. ''Hockey." proposed by Mr J. K. Dean, was responded to by Corporal Wilson, lormer member of the "Magpie.-,."' "Kindred Sports' was proposed by Mr A. Mason, and icplied to by Mr W. JJroug:' tun. "The Host aiul Hostess'' was proposed by Mr J. E. Dean and replied, to by Mr Harnett, and the "Organiser" by Mr \\. Corporal Archibald and Mr Mason. | The evening was brought to a conelii«io,n by the singing of "God Save the i King." Corporal Archibald has pre- t sonted mi enlarged group photograph , of nine of the men to the Mayor (Mr B. R. Gardener) and this will be hung in the Levin Public Libra.rv.
