William Evans was sentenced to six months' imprisonment at Newcastle. It. appears that Evans was wearing a British officer's uniform with two rows of ribbons. He obtained a chequc book and gave valueless cheques. He claimed to be entitled to wear the uniform. The Magistrate said that the uniform was to inspire confidence and rob the publi*. CONFERENCE OF PREMIERS. Melbourne, This Day When the Rt. -Hon. A. fisher was in New Zealand he aproached the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey regarding the Premiers' conference. The Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey fell in with the idea and suggested that such a conference be periodically held in "New Zealand and the Common wealth. Sir Alexander Peacock, in approving the proposal, says that the conference was rendered more important in view of the war. and the necessity of united action in defence and other matters. The conference will be held in Sydney early in May. GREEK RESERVISTS CALLED ON. The Greek Consul has notified all Greek reservists to register before the 29th inst. Received This Day 10 a.111.) RIGHT OF TRIAL TSY JURY. Melbourne, This Day. The High Court of Australia, dismissed the appeal of Bernaseoni. Judge Mll rray had stated a special case 011 several grounds, the main point being whether Bernaseoni had the right to claim a trial by jury. The Chief Justice said that the section of the Constitution providing a trial by jury related only to offences created by Parliament by Statutes passed in execution of its functions described as the laws of the Commonwealth. The request for n jury was therefore rightly refused. Mr Justice Isaacs and Mr Justice Rich concurred . THE PRICE OF FODDER. A deputation of users of fodder pointed out that one year ago chaff was procurable at £3 15s per ton, and that it now stood at £10 10s. It calculated that there was a shortage of two hui'dred thousand .tons in the fodder stocks in Victoria and prices did not show a tendency to ease. The Minister for Agriculture replied that there was not much hope of relief. The Government was importing lucerne from California and ,it cost £8 per ton landed. Chaft was bought in .Vow Zealand for £5 and £5 15s, but bags, freight and other charges brought the cost- to £9 and £0 15s landed in Melbourne: also there were risks in importing from different countries owing to the various stock diseases. - IN PARLIAMENT. London, March 16. Lord Kitchener states that since the war the ouptut of war material has increased three-hundred-fold. The Defence of the Realm Amendment Bill has received the Royal assent. The Marquis of Crewe, in reply to Lord On-rzon. said that considerable reinforcements had been sent to Ahwas to make the position perfectly strong. British"parliament. Parliament has adjourned till 14th.
