Archdeacon Coming stated that at the first native wedding he had witnessed in the islands he looked in vain for the bridegroom and bride. Enquiring ii'iun one el his ''boys" as to the bride's whereabouts he was told thai she was hidden away .somewhere while the parents were bargaining abi.ut her value in dogs' teeth, shells, etc.. the eurrenoy of the islanders. A search revealed the bride in a dark corner of her parents' lmme. Slio was tlre&set! in ornaments and as a wedding prosonl the Archdeacon presented her with a brilliant rod handkerchief. remarking that slio at- last had .something to wear. Later it was discovered that the bridegroom had taken his spear and spent the day fishing among the rocks on the beach. Everything pertaining to weddings on the islands was left entirely to the parents. Many curios from the islands were on -de at the pageant and Archdeacon Conons during his address showed the nati/e music pipes and samples of the dogs' teeth and shells used by the natives: instead of coins.
