.MONTHLY MEETING
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Levin Cham bur of Commerce was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: Messrs ii. S. Lancaster (chairman), N. V. Jloldavvay, A. Dempsey, H. -Newport, C. ii. Pyko, T. Sherlaw, J. Ilobortson, M. Fosella, I>. AY. Matheson, T. G. Vincent, and J. AV. Thompson. An apology was received from Jlr T. Heslop. llie secretary was granted leave of absence, ho having other urgent busines sto attend to. A letter was read from Mr W. d. Field ALP. in connection with the Main Trunjv trains stopping at Levin. '.t wasfitted that since last. meeting Mr J. "~Jhsbortson had received a letter from the General Manager ol' .Railways stating that the night north-bound Main Trunk express would carry Levin pasengers from Wellington on ordinary tickets. On tho motion of Mr Pyko a vote of thanks was passed to Mr VV. H. Field, M.P., and Mr J. .Robertson, for ivhat they had done in the matter. Tho chairman moved that tho Minister of Railways be requested to book passengers at ordinary' fares by the night north-bound Main Trunk train to stations north of Tailiape and to book passengers for Lovin at the ordinary faros by the south-bound Main Trunk from stations north of Taihape. Mi- Pyko seconded this and it was agreed to. Mr .Robertson explained the results ol the recent Chamber oi Commerce deputation to the County Council .e rural telephones, etc. A vote 01 thanks was accorded to nieinbeis o> the deputation fur their service. It was decided that tho secretary be instructed to keep a copy oi all outgoing correspondence, and submit the same to tho meeting following. The chairman said that ho thought that the Lands Department should be written to asking that no inoro bush lands on the ranges be alienated. All tho bush that it is now lelt should bo reserved. The place would bo far better if the bush 011 the low hills had not been felled. He moved a motion *,o tho above effect. Mr Newport supported Mr Lancaster. It would have been better if when the land was sold, the purchasers had beon compelled to reserve 10 per cent in bush. Ho seconded tho motion. Other members agreed and the motion was carried. Mr Vincent drew the attention of the Chamber to tho Beach road. He saw by the last meeting ol the County Council that no tenders had been received for metalling the road. Since then lie had heard that two tenders had been sent in. He would like to know what had become ol the tende/s. It was deicded that a deputation 0011- j .sisting of Messrs Lancaster, Vincent. Robertson and Matheson, wait 011 the County Council 011 Saturday and ascertain the position regarding tho whole matter. Mr Matheson moved that a special committee consisting of Mesrs Lancaster, Pyke, Robertson and" the mover, be set up to go into tho rural telephone scheme and report at the next meeting.of the chamber. Mr Vincent supported the motion, the County Council could not do anytiling in tho matter they should get 'llie Department had erected a branct. line from Otaki and Levin had lost tm Manakau people. Tho chairman also supported the mo Lion. llie report of the engineer Iron. Waipawa showed that the district wa.-. eminently favourable for the develop ment of the scheme. The chambet had spent a lot time previously in ohmatter and they should push 011 with it and nut leL it drop. The motion was carried. Mr V inceiit remarked 011 the obsolete t-elephono system in vogue at Lovin. it was explained that the Depart ment had intended to put 111 an up-to-date system at the local exchange, but it had been held over in view o the posibie development oi the rura. telephone scheme. it was decided to draw the attention ol the Department to the unsatisfactory state of alfairs at tho local exchange. Mr Newport said the Governmjjt should bo urged to make efforts to ob tain the Kaiviu block lor closer settlement. Thoy wanted more settlers : this district. Mr Vincent- said that a lot of the land Has under long native leas«. He thought it best to ascertain the posi tion from Mr J. It. McDonald. Mr Robertson moved that a deputation wait 011 Mr McDonald and ask him as to the whole position. Mr Dempsey seconded the motion and it was carried. The deputation will consist of the chairman and Mr Robertson.
