Grant ilervoy's aplication for leave to appeal agianst the sentence of two years' imprisonment for forging a telegram was refused, the Judge stating that ho was convicted on. the clearest possible evidence. THE SINKING OF THE KAIPARA. Captain Makepeace recently of the Knipara, arrived in charge of tho Middlesex. Mr F. E. Parker, of Levin, who lias made a business tour of the South land during: the last fortnight, told a Chronicle reporter that the who.ib throughout Canterbury was an excellent sample this year, and in Ota go and Southland there was prospect of equally good quality being reached. He was disappointed to find the iiarvest backward in Southland and the Taiori ; it was likely to be another five or weeks before the bulk of it would be harvested. This was the more reregrettable because the granaries were quite empty of last season's wheat; some stores, in fact, had closed "p pending the delivery of the season's harvest.
