Monthly Labour Report.

Following is the labour report issued for the past month by the Department of Labour for the district of Palmerston North; the district bearing the closest relation in such matters to Horowhenua district. Trade generally has been very satisfactory for the season or tho year, and sufficient outside work has been offered. The outlook is bright for tho next fewmonths. Several buildings are now in course of erection, and others are contemplated, including a now bank, a warehouse, three picture theatres, costing £12,000, £8000 and £5000 respectively, and a retail establishment to cost £10,000. - Building trades.—Bricklaying and carpentry and joinery: Very busy. Painting: Very good. Plumbing and gasfitting: Good. Stoncmasonrv : Fair. , Woodworking trades.—Box-making: Fair. Cabinetmnking ;md upholstering: Fair. On: jmring: Fair. Sash and door factories. «awmilling md wood-turning factories, etc: Very much improved. Engineering trades generally have been very good. Leather trades. — Bootmaking repair shops: Saddlery and harnessmaking: Fair. Retail trades.—Clothing, boots, drapery and groceries : Busy on account o F seasonal sales. Clothing trades.—Dressmaking nnd millinery: Busy. Tailoring (order): Fairly good. Printing trades.—Bookbinding ind printing: Very quiet. Meat freezing, etc.—Tanning, currying, fellmongery, slaughtering, freezing and preserving: Fair. Coachbnilding trades.—Blacksmith-" ing. Fair. Coach and carriage building: Fair. Cycle and motor trades.—Very busy. Agricultural operations.—Farming and dairying: Normal. Miscellaneous—Flaxmilling: Satisfactory. Prices have increased and mills are fully manned. Unskilled labour.—There have been very few callers at this office and only eight have been assisted during the month.
