DEFENCE PREPARATIONS IN AUSTRALIA.

Sydney, This Dnv. The Sydney Cricket Association has appealed to all clubs to participate in defence preparations and form rifle clubs in various districts. The Tasmanian tour has been abandoned. A deputation, representing the National Rifle Reserve, asked the removal of the legal objection to rifle shooting on Sunday. Tho Hon. J. H. Cann, in announcing that arrangements wouJd be made to allow practising for military purposes. said that our enemies would not call a truce on Sundays, "and there can be no serious objections to- making preparation on that day fo receive him. Tho National Rifle Reserve movement is growing apace and clubs are forming everywhere. Ministers and other leadens are taking an active part and delivering patriotic addresses and other methods for promoting it. The Hon. W. Holinan has accepted Mr G. Wade's truce and will not "deal with controversial legislation idnring the critical stages of the war or till the Ist May.
