The trees lining Oxford-street nave i had a strenuous time this year and where not sheltered from the wind have : been stripped of most of their leaves. One tree also has for many weeks past afforded amusement for children who swing from its branches to the ground. < To gain the branches throe shallow kerfs have been cut in the trunk and cross pieces nailed thereto, thus forming a step ladder for the children to ascend. A cable message from Sydney states that new business of the A.M.P. Society for 1914 of the ordinary branch was over 6J millions and of the industrial branch £968,000. A drowning accident occurred on Saturday aftenoon in the Hutt river, tiie victim being Philip Pearce, aged 20, whose parents reside at Trentham. The deceased and a boy companion named Archibald JlohnOraig went to bathe in the river at about 2.30 p.m. and after they had been in the water some time Pearce got out of his depth.. Craig went to his assistance, but had to let Pearce go in order to save himself. Alter going to the shore the lad returned to the stream to make another attempt to rescue his comrade. This time he secured Pearce and brought him ashore, but the latter was apparently dead. An alarm was given an<l several i>eople from the neighbourhood made an effort to restore life by artificial respiration. Medical aid was subsequently available and operations were continued but without success.—■ Association.
