Ollicial.—We carried a redoubt, captured two lines of trenches and successfully reached tho third lines north of Soissons. The Germans thrice attempted recapture but failed. A very violent attack near Haute Ohevalchee compelled us to fall back along the front a kilometre. We counter-attack-ed' and re-occupied the positions,, and very brillinatly captured a hill near Soupir and three lines of German trenches. We repulsed three violent counterattack's, and the enemy being unable to retake tho lost ground bombarded Soissons, igniting the law courts. Our artillery south of Laon Craonno demolished machine guns, silenced, artillery and wrecked tho trenches. The Germans attacked oiur on a. hill west of Perthes, also simultaneously direct attack captured Perthes and advanced beyond the neighbouring woods. 'Tho total gains at liezo were five hundred metres directly ahead. Our artillery inflicted considerable losses on the entire front at Rheims. In Argonne we progressed to Woevre north-west of Flirez, Dallvwood and La Petre wood and maintained our positions at Cernay. The enemy strongly reinforced reoccupied Burnhauptlehaut, but lost heavily. E.N'EMY AGAIN REPULSED WITH HEAVY LOSSES. Official—The enemy were again repulsed northwards of Soissons aiA driven back in the vicinity of Perthes with heavy losses. THE FIGHTING IN POLAND. London, Jan. 9. The Chronicle's Poland' correspondent, speaking of the fighting from Cracow to Raiwka, says for thirty-six hours tho battle shifted like a moving flame in a Jong line. Its intensity has now abated. The Germans entirely failed to accomplish their plans, with ghastly loss to themselves. The tight at Cracow was characteristic of the encounters along the whole front. The Germans' attack was exceptionally heavy throughout New Year's Bay, culminating in an infantry assault at night. Tho Gorman artillery throughout the day lavishly shelled the Russian trenches with the huge thirty-two centimetre howitzers. During an infantry charge the German generals sacrificed . their men ftke water. The ground was heaped with ridges of grey-clad
dead. Upwards of GOOD Germans were killed at Gradow alone, and one night's abortive fighting along the front cost them 30.000 dead' and 1 three times as many wounded. THE DEVASTATORS. The Chronicle's Poland correspondent says the Kaiser's latest proclamation. found 011 some prisoners states' that if compelled to retire from Poland they must leave standing neither house nor town, only the bare earth underfoot.
