LEVIN A DEFERS LEVIN B

Yesterday a flock of twenty-two gathered on the of the Levin rereserve with "the result thatA division secured 2 gr.ubs and the B section got only J/. The B's, for some reason, adopted the name magpie some time back, but on the amount of chattering that went on yesterday the pica bars may be given to both lots. From the bullyoft* play went into B's circle, and G. Walton had a shot at goal, but missed. TEe attack was kept up; then the B's took a turn, but Howe was guarding the nest, and though play was in A's half for a while nothing happened. An attack on B's goal followed. It failed, and very soon the A's were again defending, but the ball went behind. Then the A's worked play into their opponents' half, and with a good shot Broughton secured the first goal for A. This ruffled B's plumage. They took the ball into A's half and kept it there for atime, and then up and down the .field four or five times. Once it was taken by Macindoe, but Pio was waiting the attack and kicked it out. Then the A's gathered around their prey and kept up a pood attack. They hit the ball from circle to corner and back again, and after much pecking Broughton got A's second goal. Half time was sounded, the scores being A's 2, B's 0. After half-time the B magpies attacked strongly, and the ball went behind twice. They were attacked in turn, but at the next.attempt Smart got the ball intothe net after Howe had saved once. Their success encouraged the B's, and they returned to A's half intent on another goal. They considered they got it, but the referee said no. For a while there was some chattering and fluttering round. Play remained in front of A's goal until Macindoe and Anderson broke away with the ball. Anderson was outside the rules, and his fine shot at goal was useless. B's gathered up the ball in their claws, and cams back to A's end again. A corner hit and circle 'play followed, but Young's shot at goal missed. Next Pio had a chance to distin-; guish himself as goal keeper. For the rest of the time play became a monotonous scurry upland down the field, both sides having plenty of shots at the goal, but all missed. The last ten or twelve minutes was played under difficulties, because the sun inconsiderately refused to stay up any longer. The game ended: A's 2, B's 1. For . the A's, Howe, Anderson, Parsons, Broughton, Winter, Murray and Macindoe played well, and for the B'b, Smart, Martin, Wilson, and Thompson played well. Young did well and only needs further acquaintance with- the game to be in the front ranks. Mr C. H. Judd was referee. One word in conclusion: The game should either be sEorter or start earlier'.. Play in the. dusk is no use to anyone. The Australian magpie at any rate never goes after grubs in the dusk. He is singing his evening song in the tops of the gums at that time.
