ESTIMATES OF EXPENDITURE FOll 1914-15.

The streets committee of Levin

Borough Council reported last night on necessary repairs to the chief roads of the borough. Following are the details of the- report :— I.—That 1500 yards of crushed

metal be obtained to include a fair proportion of screenings for footpath work. Overseer's estimate of cost, £300.

2. -That metal be placed on the following streets:— Weraroa road (Mako Mako road to Batfi-street), 350. yards. Queen-street (from. the banks to the saleyards), 50 yards. Stanley-street West, 150 yards. Exeter-street East (also widen the formation) 150 yards Winchester-street (Stanleystreet to Bath-street) 70 yards.

3.—That in Queen street the grade be improved at the railway crossing. Both sides of the street to be graded and cleaned up, from Queens wood road to Bristolstreet. Engineer's estimate £20.

4.--That 100 yards of metal be obtained from the county pit" and placed on the main road near Mr Bartholomew's mill.— Estimated cost 3s per yard. s.—That the bicycle track be extended from Mako Mako road to the railway station, and that the path be tarred and sanded. Overseer's estimate £37. 6.—That tar and sand work on the following footpaths be authorised :—

(a) Mako Mako road, from Oxford-st. to Beeve-st. "track 6ft. wide*also water table to be tarred or treated with asphalt. (b) Bath-street West, fourteen chains of footpath to be tarred and sanded and seven chains of wafer table to be* made similar to the present bicycle track. a (c) Complete tar and sanding in Queen-street (Cam-bridge-street to Winches-ter-street, south-side) and tar and sand from railway line to Cambridge-street. (d) Cambridge-street, tar and sand track 6ft wide also water table (Queen-streefc to "Exeter street.) (e) Oxford-street North. (Exeter to Devon street, west side.) 7.—That portions of the footpaths in Kent-street and Bathstreet East receive attention by grading and the use of screenings, etc., and that screenings be used where necessary upon the footpaths of the borough and par-" ticularly Weraroa-road Soutlj and Cambridge-street North.

B.—That a truck load of totara be procured for culverts. 9.—That with regard to the proposal of the Horowhenua County Council to purchase a new garder the Levin Borough Council undertake to contribute the sum of £25 towards its cost in return for the use of the grader in the Borough wben required for street work. 10.—That a sum of £75 be placed upon the estimate for the purpose of hiring a steam roller for the work on the Borough roads during the next twelve months, should the opportunityoccur to hire such roller.

In regard to clause G, subsection b, an amendment was moved by Councillor Haswell, seconded by Councillor Matheson, that the proposal to asphalt seven chains of watertable be deleted The amendment was carried by six to three, the minority being Councillors Lancaster, France and Prouse.

The remainder of the commitfcefe's report* was adopted in its original form Respecting clause 10, Councillor Lancaster said he understood there was a likelihood of the. Horowhenua County Council purchasing a roller. Councillor Blenkhorn suggested that should be donee, to make an easier grade over the rise in Weraroa-road North. He asked that i>2s be put on the estimates as a vote for that pur-" pose.

Councillor Lancaster doubted if the people whose properties abutted on the hill- would require the kill cut down-
