Horowhenua Hockey Association.

The annual report for the past season was read at th© meeting of the Horowhenua Hockey, Association, held in the club room of the Levin Hotel on April 22nd. It showed that the season was commenced with 15 clubs—eight men's and seven ladies, and had it not been for the unfortunate incident, which ended in the disqualification of the Otaki, Raliui and Te Horo clubs, the season the players' point of view) won I;.-' have been the most successful record. In the first round splen did form was shown by the players and everything promised a most successful season. Before the second round commenced the committee decided to give the grading scheme a trial (as recommended by the annual general meeting), but this did not meet with the approval of the three southern clubs, and they withdrew from the competitions and robbed the sport of some little interest for a few weeks. The financial position of the association was satisfactory, there being a credit balance of £5 Gs 7d. The ladies' championship was keenly fought out, and after some interesting games was won by the Oliau Ladies' team, to whom the committee tendered its heartiest congratulations. The committee also congratulated Mr Henderson and his little B team on the splendid form shown by it in securing second place in tlie competition. The men's championship was won by tlie Levin A team, Moutoa beins second. The committee congratulated both teams. Only one representative match was played during the past season—that against a Wellington Wednesday team. Horowhenua was defeated but not disgraced. Matches arI ranged for the 3rd of June, in ' Wellington, were declared off, owing to the grounds not being in a fit condition for play. The question of providing playing grounds gave the committee considerable ticuble during the season, and it was of the opinion that all new clubs joining the association should be given to understand that they must provide suitable grounds and have them properly prepared for matches. The affiliation of the ladies' clubs with the New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Association was a matter that should be attended to before the season commenced, as the ladies clubs were at a disadvantage in not being able to compete at tlie ladies' tournaments. The thanks of the Association were due to Messrs Byron Brown and_ Frank Penn for handsome donations to the funds, and to all those who as- • sisted in various ways the committee gave its warmest thanks. Finally the committee was deeply grateful to the gentlemen who donned the flannels and carried the whistles.
