lIOROWHENUA REFUREES , ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the. Horowhenua Referees' Association was held in the club room of the Levin Hotel on Saturday evening l : the 18th inst- Present:-- W. Broughton, J. Rose, -). Procter, ,T. Smith, W. Thomson and R. S. Horn. Mr Procter waa elected to the chair.
The balance-sheet showed a debit balance of £1 3s 10d. Of thi10s 3d was a liability of tho previous year, making , the debit for the stason 13s 7d. The balancesheet aa read was adopted. Mr Brougliton moved, and Mr Rose seconded : That the secretary be instructed to write to the Horowhenua Football Union, place the position before the union, and ask assistance.
The motion was carried
The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr B. R. CfanTener: president, Mr J. Mclntyre; vicepresidents, Messrs 31. Suhan, D. Green, C. H. Pyke, J. C. 'Merton, —. Winiata (senior), J. Rose, ,1. Smith; secretary, M> W. Eggleton: appoinment committee, Messrs W. E. Eccleton, W. Thomson, and the secretary; vice-presidents to the New Zealand Referes , Association, Mr J. Rose; delegate to the New Zealand Referees' Association, Mr W. Brougliton: now members, Messrs J. C. Merton, I). Green, - -. Nicholson, J. Ropata (Otaki),A. Dixon, W. Bevan, L. Wehipeihana.
Mr Thomson said that referees should meet and discuss the rules. He had heard referees at games played on the same ground giving different decisions on the same point. The association should meet once a fortnight and go through the ruloa and decide what they intended to do. They ehoulo also get the latest rulings fro?the New Zealand Referees' Association. This was important, especially when visiting teams pla.ved here. He proposed that ,' association have such a meeting before the opening of the season. Mr Rose seconded this, and it was carried unanimously. Mr Rose drew attention to the prevalence of bad language used 0-1 the field. It should be put down with a firm hand at the commencement of the season. Only that afternoon, wßlle referring a scratch march, he had heard some very bad language used.
Mr Thomson said it would be good to rrei members of tTie teams together occasionally and let the referees advise them and give instructions in the rules of the game. On the motion of 5Tr Broughton, seconded by Mr Rose, a vote of thanks to Mr Horn (who resigned the secretaryship) was carried unanimously. In speaking to the motion, Mr Broughfon spoke appreriatively of Mr Horn's services: lio> was sorry that Mr Horn could not seo his way clear to retain the position. He had always -worked -for the benefit of the association, and ho hoped that he would become a member of the association and combine to help them along. Mr Horn returned thanks to thp members for ftieir kindly references to himself. He was afraid that he did not. know enough about "Rugby rules to take an active part as referee. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair.
