RAILWAYS, KATES AND FINANCE. Auckland, This Day. The Hon. J. Allen, interviewed, on the subject of railway rates and finance, said that alteration of railway rates has to be seriously considered. "Personally Ido not think it possible to reduce rates, considering- the increase in the annual cost of upkeep. As Minister of Finance I do not see how we are going to get £he railway revenue which I anticipated for the year just ended. This is largely owing to the loss of revenue due to the folly of the strikes. It has come out a little better than it looked two or three months ago, but the revenue is nothing like what I ought to have got from the railways. The Auckland Exhibition pulled us up a bit, but not to the' extent anticipated." SUPREME Cut ltT. »> 1011, J.
