The new settlers on the Heatherlea settlement are rapidly improving their sections, and bushfelling and fencing are proceeding. One or two settlers been running milk to the factory for some time
now. Others are preparing to plant out orchards. The success attending the settlement of this block should encourage local bodies to keep on agitating until the hundreds of acres at present growing thistles around Levin are put to profitable use. The secretary to the Agricultural Department has
circularised the Levin Chamber of Commerce inviting suggestions as to improvements that might be made in the present form wherein London market quotations are cabled to New Zealand; also inviting details of any other products which might be added advantageously to the list of primary produce now dealt with in the High Commissioner's cablegrams. The movement in the Manawatu Plaxworkers' Employees Union to sever its connection with the Federation of Labour is alleged to be connected directly with the agitation set up by a cautious section of the union. The Flaxworkers' Union paid £'200 a year to the Federation and supported a ' member of the Federation executive at a salary of £4 plus £2 per week travelling allowances. The objectors allege that as a direct result of the union's affiliation with the Federation of Labour the fin-
ar.eiai position of the' union was endangered. Messrs Semple and Parry intend, during the week, to carry on a unify campaign throughout the Mnnawatu flax mills. The special inocfing called to consider the matter takes place on the 28th inst.. at Palmorston North. There was a. goodly attendance "at Monday night's mission service at St. Mary's Church, Levin. The nussioner preached on an appropriate subject, his text being "Thou Art The Man." Ilo'iy Communion was celebrated in the church this (Tuesday) morning, the attendance being excellent. Evidently tho mission is disturbin}.* the erstwhile • late morning slumbers, of some of Levin's citizens.
