The melodrama "Temptation of Drink" shows how Hans, gardener to Professor Marlow. an artist, is in love with Hannn, daughter of a drunken toymaker. She becomes a moilel in the professor's studio, where Martin, a student, persuades her to join with the rest in drinking to her success. She. falls in love with Martin and jilts the gardener. Martin goes to Italy to complete his studies, and Hanna, going home, is tempted by her father to drink, and soon they are 011 the verge of ruin. Hanna is saved from herself by the professor's daughter, and becomes friendly again with her "first, sweetheart, Hans. (In Martin's rej turn, a famous painter, lie falls I in love with the professor's daughter, and Hanna, mad with jealousy, again falls a victim to drink. Her father dies, and she swears never to touch drink again. She poses for a picture Martin is painting of a slum girl, and he complains that the expression of hopelessness has disappeared from his model's face, and his work is not progressing. He again tempts her to drink, and she succumbs. A masterpiece is the result, and the artist becomes betrothed to the professor's daughter. Hanna revenges herself by slashing the picture into shreds. Defeated and humiliated, the artist breaks down, and has the death of a woman on his conscience.
