The Australian Swimming Union has refused the application of New Zealand for admission to the championship agreement, ou the grounds that great difficulty would be imposed on remote States when the venue of the championships was in the dominion. DOMINIONS COMMISSION. The Daily Telegraph, in a leader, referring to the Dominions' Commission report, says that "In bringing the whole thing down to the final analysis, we see that what the report, so carefully compiled, amounts to is that we in Australia can and do effectively govern ourselves. The report is a very intelligent and comprehensive survey over a'wide- field, but one in which Australians have long been labouring, and have arrived at about the same results as these capable industrious gentlemen gathered, which appear to be of very little practical help. SYDNEY'S GROWTH. The Government statistician estimates that if the population continues to increase at the present rate the metropolis will contain one million at the end of 1920. SUGAR MILL BURNED. Brisbane, This Day. The Colonial Sugar Company's mill at Childers was badly damaged by fire. The loss is £8000. TO REBUILD. Sydney, lhia Day. The Lord Mayor has consented to receive subscriptions to rebuild the Ambrym hospital. About £10,000 will be required, and a fund will also be opened in New < Zealand.
