$ EVENTS IX SHANNON. (Chronicled by our Resident Representative). • EIRE AT MIRANUI. A fire occurred at Seifert's Mir. anui Mill about 2 a.m. on Saturday morning. The building destroyed was used as a cook house, with billiard room, store and dinin«• loom and caretaker's quarters. It was leased by Mr Rowley, from the Messrs Seifert, and the lessee, who was cook at the mill, resided on the premises with his family. None of the furniture was saved, so rapid was the progress of the Hie, the occupants just escaping, with their lives and the children being carried nut in their night attire. A bucket brigade was soon organised amongst the mill hands, and did good service in preventing the fire from spreading to the butchers' shops and the deeping apartments close by. Several hand pumps were also brought into use, but nothing I'ould save the building in which the fire originated, and in''about half an hour a number of blackened piles and several chimney stacks were all that remained, of the Miranui mill cook house. It will soon be re-built, however, as Mr Seifert is already making arrangements with this end in view. The building was insured for £900 ; m the Royal Insurance Co., and tlx furniture and fittings, billiard tabic and stores for £fi<so in the Commercial Union. *?ne origin of the fire is a mystery, but it started from the inside, and might have been caused by a spark from one of the fireplaces. Both Mr Seifert and Mr Rowley arc losers, the insurance not nearly covering their losses. Temporary arrangements have been made for carrying on the catering in the stripper shed. RIFLE SHOOTING- • /.
