An old woman, iiiss Maggie Douglas, was burned to death at an. early hour this morning-. Deceased, who was somewhat eccentric, and who suffered from rheumatism, lived alone in a cottage in Torridge-street. A neighbour was awakened by the crackling of burning timber, but when he arrived on the scene he found the fire, had too strong a hold to give any hope of rescuing the inmate. At the Roman Catholic Basilica, to-day, the marriage took place of Mrs Maearthy, widow of the late T. G. Maearthy, to Mr Walter Reid. The bridt, 1 was given away by the Premier (Right Hon. W. F. Massey). Sir Joseph Ward was among the guests. FARMER'S FATAL ACCIDENT. | j Whangarei, This Day. Frederick Hardy, aged 09, a farmer ' residing at Ruatangata, was killed, on Monday by a dray that he was driving falling on him while it was turning a sharp corner.
