Editor v. Contributor.
An unusual difference between an editor and his contributor was ventilated at a meeting of the Wellington Branch of the Teachers Institute last evening, in connection with a report received from the Manawatu Sub-Branch of the Institute, requesting that the District Institute should reopen the matter of Harding v. the Editor of the Institute "Journal" (Mr Davidson). At the request of some of the members present, Mr Meßain, the delegate from the Manawatu SubBranch, said that nearly two years ago Mr Harding, a member, wrote a letter to the editor of the Journal with an accompanying note, asking the editor to either publish the letter in full or to return it, for which purpose stamps were enclosed. In a succeeding issue of the Journal a mutilated form of the letter appeared, with a footnote from the editor stating that he had expunged some "silly insinuations" from it. The writer felt that an injustice had been done to him, and although he wrote to the editor for an explanation, lie got no reply. Mr Harding then took the matter to the Manawatu Sub-Branch of the Institute, which body decided to ask Mr Davidson for an explanation. Subsequently Mr M'Bain proceeded, Mr Davidson, in a letter to the sub-branch, expressed regret, but on being asked to publish his apology in the Journal, replied that he had not apologised as he had done no wrung. Then the Manawatu Sub-Branch approached the District Institute on the matter, but the latter decided to take no action: hencc the pi-esent motion. After some discussion on the matter the resolution was carried by 18 votes to 10. During the course of further discussion on a proposal that the matter be referred back to the Management. Committee, Mr Grundy said that the matter was really one of very little importance, and they appeared to be making a mountain out of molehill. . The motion to rpfer the matter to the Management CommitTee for further consideration was lost by a large majority.—Dominion.
