INQUEST AT LEVIN
ON AN OLD SOLDIER
An inquest on the body of Patrick Gaule, an old age pensioner, Avas held at Levin yesterday evening by Mr Nation, Coroner. AA rilliam Batten gave CA-idenee thai he was in the employ of Mr J. R. McDonald, of Heatherlea, and had known the deceased for six years. He had been on Mr McDonald's station for about 20 years, and Avas 8 : > years of age. Of late the station had been a home for deceased, and occasionally he had complained of his heart, and in health he was very shaky. About ■"> o'clock on Thursday morning Avitness heard a bump on the floor, and Avent to Avhere Gaule slept to see Avhat it was. He found him lying on the floor. He put him back into his bed, and in the morning took him some breakfast, Avhich he ate. He stayed in bed during the day, and Avitness attended to him. In the afternoon Avitness 'spoke to
Gniile about going to the Old Men's Home, but he said he was Tiot well enough to go. At (!.•'!() Avitness Avent in with some" tea, and found Gaule lying on the floor with his chest on a stool. Life was extinct.. Consfable Bagrie deposed that Gaule bad been rather intemperate, and he had often spoken to him and urged him to go home. He appeared to be failing fast. Deceased Avas a native of Ireland, and had be<#i through the Taranaki Avar, as Avell as active service elseAvhere. Verdict: "Died from natural causes. "
