HOCKEY CLUB DANCE.
AND IMiEvSENTATION OF PHIZES.
Levin Men's Hockey Club held their annual social gathering last night in the Town Hall. Some eighty couples took part in the dancing, and there Avere representatives present from Ohau, Otaki and Shannon Clubs. Piano music Avas provided by Mr J . Kearsley, and io his lively fingering the dancers footed it merrily until an early hour this morning. An extra dance Avas played by Mr Sutton. The supper that Avas provided and served by the ladies of the club met Avith outspoken approval, and the club desires to couvev its (hanks io the ladies (Mosdames Hugh Hall, P. XV. Pink, T. Dean, and the Misses Ambler and Stradon) for their kindness. The M.'sC. for the dance, Messrs A. Dickson and "W. IJroiighton, Avore the right men in the right place, and the club secretary (Mr A. Smart) worked assiduously both before the ball, during its progress, and hardest task of all -next morning. The furniture used' for the occasion was lent by Harvey and Co., and the decorations Averc done by the club members. The siage looked very nice, tricked out in ivyleaves with lillies lending variety io the greenery.
The Levin Men's Hockey Club has proved itself champion team of the district for the second year in succession, and occasion Avas made at last night's gathering to hand over the ("llackin Cup, Avhieli is the championship trophy for hockey in. these parts. . Ifv Gardener, Mayor of Levin, who made rhe presentation, spoke of the long and erediiable record made by Levin in the hockey field, since the days when Mr D.. S. Mackenzie organised his famous team that had to travel 20 miles (to Palnierston) for its games, a ltd Avhich succeeded in Avinning the championship twice as well as gaining second honours in three other years. Mr Easther, captain of Ihis year's team, in receiving the trophy from Mr Gardener, expressed his pleasure in knowing that all the games played this season had been played in good feeling: he was sure that in all the lime he had been captain there never had been one word used out of place amongst the players': there had been absolutely no ill-feeling amongst them, and in consequence the play had been good and the games enjoyable. Other trophies handed over durum, the oven in f> , were those presented by Mr Robertson, M.P. (patron of the club) and Mr If. YValkley, respectively. The Walklex stick was awarded for "the player taking mosi interest in the club." and Mr A. Smari wax the nceipienf. Mr 'Robertson's trophy went to -I. Thompson, as most-improved player in the H team.
