Public Meeting at Manakau.

FAVOURS HOSPITAL SEVERANCE FROM WELLINGTON.

Mr B. R. Gardener, who is speakiug at the different ce-ntres of the Horowhenuii County, held a very successful and enthusiastic meeting at Manakau last night, in connection with the proposed severance of this county from the Wellington Hospital District, with the object of being attached to Palmerston Xorth. Mr J. Hurley was voted to the chair, and introduced the speaker. Mr Gardener, in the course of his remarks, placed beforo tho audience reasons why this proposed severance should take place—both from a humanitarian point of view and from the financial aspect. But few patients were now being sent from this district to the niafn hospital at "Wellington, and better results could bo _ got from Palmerston North, ho said, for the reasons that with one exception, the towns in this district were so situated that patieirts were able to resell Palmerston much quicker than they oould get to the Metropolitan Haspi•tal. Therefore, if tho change were made,-a great deal of pain and .suffering would he avoided. He gave many other reasons why the change was absolutely necessa'ry, and at the close of his address the following resolution. was proposed and carried unanimously: "That this meeting of ratepayers and residents of Manakau aiul' neighbourhood (in the Otaki Riding of the Horowhenua County), is entirely favourable to the proposal to, sever the whole of the County from the Wellington Hospital District, and join that of Palniorston Xorth, and considers that, by so doiiig, the best interests of the residents of the County will be served."
