A representative public meeting was held at Kimholton yesterday, and a Chamber of Commerco was formed to frame definito proposals to place before the Minister for Publib Works for the construction of a light* railway from Opiti to Feild.ing. The distance is 29 miles, via Kimholton, Kiwitea and Cheltenham and tho Minister is to be invited to inspect the proposed route. ACCIDENT TO A BUSHMAN. CARTERTON, This Day. An unfortunate accident befell i young man, Frank Daysh, yesterday. He was employed in the bush at Maungatarere Valley by Mr Rathbone, a timber merchant. While hi' was engaged with othors in hauling a log out of the bush, the log suddenly lurched forward and crushed ! Da.vsh against a stump. His right leg was crushed fearfully. 'flic leg was put in splints, and Daysh was carried in (over ten miles) to Carterton and sent to tho Masterton hospital. Daysh is aged 23 or 24. H.M..S, NEW ZEALAND. WESTPORT, This Day. 11.M.5. New Zealand arrived iiWesport roadstead from Greymouth this morning. An official party left in a tug at 9 a.m., to communicate. As tho Tutanekai was not available to tend, it was decided not take the, children to the roadstead. They are being convoyed by train to the end of the breakwater, from whenec views of the warship are obtainable. The weather is bad. Many country children arc in town, and aro being j entertained at free picture shows and supplied with refreshments. SO THERE! HASTINGS, This Day. Marton and Glenmore havo been scratched for all engagements at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's wintei meeting.
