MR LEGER HITS OUT.
(To the Editor). Sir. ''The man who does not believe in training to defend himself and family is a monitor and a poor citizen," says "Game Cock." 1 agree that far with "Cranio Cock." And when the man realises that he is tr lining not to defend himself <u family, but to protect the interests of Gold JJug and Co.. and to further enslave himself, his family, and his class, what sort of a cuckoo is he? China will he too liu.sy at home for the next thirty years. Compulsory conscription of these small conn tries would only tickle Japan. The fast, developing socialism in both China and Japan and elsewhere i; a far greater protection to us than all the game cocks. .Socialism is against war in all countries. Conscription is the price we are asked to pay to Cohen and Co. for allowing these voting countries to borrow more millions. Tie up the democracy, and then Cohen feels safe. Otherwise, no more millions (and n. more votes). Politicians would pawn the air itself for votes. Besides, conscription suits our trust n.agnates, too. They can safely work their highway diplomacy until nineteen out of twenty men hcive no more country or family or property to defend. It is a fine old game. Our friend "Game Cock" gets himself entangled like a young kitten playing with thread when lie touches on this writer "enforcing compulsory exercise on his fowls." My reply to that: I enforce egg-produc-ing, not compulsory droning. If F picked out all the physically fittest specimens of a pen and set them killing or maiming the strongest birds of the next pen instead of producing eggs, then the actual .workers would have to shell out eggs (oi work) twice as quick to keep the crazy ones goiug. So that one set would degenerate through overwork; and the other set perish through slaughter—and.only weeds would bt left to 1)i-cwl from. Where is flic sense in you. "Game Cock?"— Yours, etc., H. LEGER. Weraroa/ 20th May, 1913.
