Correspondence.

(Oar correspondents' opinions are tlioir own; tho responsibility of editorial ones makes sufficient bailout for tho Editor's shoulders).

THE LAKE. (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln answer to Mr Franco, 1 would like to say that if tho lake was lowered another foot, as has been proposed, in addition to tho two feet that it has already been lowered, it would he a good work. Look at tho hundreds of acres of land that are affected by the rising of the lake at the northern end of tho lake. Mv France points out that the work that has been done is for the 'benefit of « few speculators in Maori land who will get a much bigger price for their land than thoy paid for ifc. Does Mr-France, then, think that the' Maoris are boing robbed. In tho old days tho natives used to do this work of keeping the outlet clean themselves, but not si" the present onee. The outlet lias not been cleaned for many years, and we have the result. Then tho pakehn comes along wind buys tho lnnfl, and to make it fit for stock lowers the lake, and yet Mr Franco holds that he is not entitled to the rise in tho value of the land. Then again, he mentions that it would spoil the lake for boating if it was lowered any more. Well, we know ourselves what a failure boating on the Horowheiiua Lake has been of late years. "Why? 'Because the water ha,s been full of green vegetation and weeds, and the smell has not been conducive to merrymaking on the water. You might as well take a man to your house and tell him to make himself at home after you had broken a couple of rotten eggs under the table. Anyway, all 1 hope i« that the work will he carried out. and if it is I hope that those wlro do it get the benefit. — Yours, etc.. TUNA.
