A ■ IMI, ' :vL\TA,ii. one ol the iiil;;>v enjoyable match ,s 01 Luc iear, in tho U'liu cnciCot uorut, v\as played when •shannon c Wednesday team visited Levin. 1n.:., nei'e unfortunately three men short Out good .substitutes were provided. as may be seen by the scores. Judl (the Levin .skipper) guessed wrong, as usual, and Shannon had the privilege of going to the crease first. Judd has a good wagging tail in his Wednesday team, and his thoughts run so much on "tail" that he always cries it when the tossing is done. Ais head predominates, lit generally loses the toss. Quarrie and Butterwoith opem-d for Shannon. The latter, usually .1 good bat. was clean bowled by Howe first ball. "Woods followed, and th> next ball took his middle peg. Howehas'been unfortunate in just missing the hat, trick on more than one occasion ; so everyone hoped lie would do it this time. However, it was not to be: Graham made four and then was caught by Judd. Broughton (substitute) camo next, and batted well for 21, when he played on Ld Simpson. Bovis looked as if he was going to be a trouble, but after he had scored one Mottershead cleverly brought him down just over the line, after which he was clean bowled by Howe. The only other to show any form was I'ringle (substitute), who was not out for 10. and the innings closed for oi.
Levin opened with Field and Chidley. hut neither batsmen looked comfortable. Field was bowled for 0. Hiittcrworth was trundling very well indeed. Chidley made. 7, Cooler 7. and Hugh Hall also came i-:> light with 0. One of his hits (a patent one-handed "swipe" of his own; proved to he the biggest hit of the day. Levin looked like losing when the two last men started : 20 runs were wanted to tie. Howe and Cooper were, at the wickets; tin; question was "Howe could we ">'eeooperate" ; but the score crept on and.on. and excitement was intense til! at last only one run was required to win. Quarrie must have smelt a rat. for he changed the bowling. Going on himself, with his first ball he upset Howe's stumps, leaving the game a tie---o-l till. Afternoon tea again was provided by Mesdamcs .Judd and Hall, to whom thanks are due. Mr liovis suitably thank-.1 the Levin team (and especially th» ladies) for their hospitality, and held out great hopes for a regular Wednesdav team next season in Shannon.
Next 'Wednesday a return match will he played with the Veterans, and it has heen suggested that the veterans he the entertainers —mi wliioh case the .anxiety as to whether the hilly is boiling may keep down their propensity for watching the howling too closely.
