♦ EVENTS IX SHANNON. (Chronicl€tf by Our Resident Representative). BOROUGH PROPOSAL NOT FAVOURED. A public meeting, convened by Mr J. R. Stansell, was Held in the Druids' Hall on Monday evening, for tho purpose of considering tlio advisableness of forming tJhannaii into a Borough, There was a good attendance, about a hundred persons being present. There was somo difficulty in finding a chairman, hut ultimately Mr Stansell acted in that capacity and laid his views before the audience. He referred to the fact that when a similar proposad had boon submitted in 1908. it had been negatived. But Shannon had advanced since then; there were 220 houses in the proposed borough council .'iron, representing iii population of about 1000. If they decided to 'become a borough they could soo nbavc a water supply, electric light and other advantages. He called on those piesent to state their views. Mr Cur-ran asked Mr .Stansell how many sections he owned in Shannon. Mr Stansell replied about a hundred; and that he had been the moans of erecting about -1.0 houses. Mr Curran asked' what was the cost of the drain at the south end of tho town . Mr Stansell replied CISO. Mr Curran considered the inonov ' had been squandered away on such a work. Mr T. Liiul adversely criticised Mr Stansell and his proposal, which ho considered would do more harm than good. : Mr Vonu asked if Ihere was ?.v advantag • that could be obtained under a borough council which could not be got under the Countv Council. Mi- Stansell favoured the formation of a borough council, but admitted that the advantages referred to could bo obtained under the County Council. Mr J. M. O'Connor suggested W\?. : . a motion should he proposed. r.nd on this Mr H. Logan moved "That Shannon be formed into a borough." Mr o'C'o::nu' seconded the motion. Mr W. H. Gunning moved, as an amendment, "That in the opinion of this meeting the time is premature for the formation of a self-governing body for Shannon." Mr Carter seconded the amenl nient. which was carried. The meeting then broke up. The members of the Hope of Shannon Lodge. No. 00. T.0.G.T.. spent an enjoyable evening in "open night" last Monday. Several visitors wcvn present, and games, songs and recitations made the time pas* pleasantly till the hour for dosinc: nerved. The W.C.T. (Bro. Farrier 1 * presided.
