Horowhenua Lake.

DEPUTATION" TO DOMAIN HOARD. .Major Hurlinson was in the chair at a meeting of the Hoard., held in Levin on Saturday morning. In reviewing tho work of Lhe past year, the chairman said that the .Hoard had 110 power to :lo ■anything except -to the surface or tlto lake. Last year they had met the local Maoris with a view to ascertaining how far they would go in the matter of clearing the outlet of the stream, but nearly all were -against the lowering of the lake. This year they hoped tho Maoris would be more conciliatory. Major ISurliu.son was re-elected as chairman for the ensuing year. Mr Hartholomew said he thought that a deputation should wait on the Prime Minister with a view to the Government buying the lake. As it was now, it was detrimental to the best interests of the district. .Mr Gardener then introduced a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce. consisting of Mr K. S. Lancaster and Mr F. G. Roe. Mr Lancaster said that it w«k time some action was taken by either the Government or some local body. When he first came here, i wenty-ttip'o years ago. it was possible to get a,, least two chains further out than was possible now on this side of the lake. He thought that the outlet should be cleaned. tie would like to see a meeting of the Whites and Maoris: as the lake was now it was a menace to the public health. Mr .Prouse. as a member of the board, in reply, said the matter wa> one of great importance. The board be said, had 110 power to do anvthing to the outlet, .as it was outside their boundary. ITe thougV the owners of the land bordering on the lake and outlet to the stream should be forced bv the County Council to keep the outlet free. Mr Gardener then pointed out that it oo.uld not be done, as the creelc was in the hands of trustees. Mr Bartholomew said nothing could be done until a meeting of the Maoris was callcd: Hanita Henare then said that is far ns he was concerned, lie was agreeable to the lake being lowered, but would not answer for the others It was resolved, on tho motion of Mr Gardener. that a deputation consisting of the chairman and Messrs Gardener and Bartholomew wait on '.he County Council at its next meetbig to see what could be done.
