A very: painful sensation was caused here when the London massage ciimo through concerning tho loss of the Southern party consisting of Captain Scott, Dr. Wilson, Captain Oats, Petty Officer Evans and Lioutenant Bowers. Application immediately was made to Mr J. J. Kingey. New Zealand agent for tho expedition. for confirmation of the London message. Mr Ivinsey, however, was unable to add details to the message received from London ; he said it was a repetition of ono ho had himself sent. A further message should shortly bo in the hands of the New Zealand newspapers, hutall information at this stage would have to come through London. It is understood Mrs Wilson has been for some timo in Now Zealand, awaiting her husband's return. The early return of tho Terra. Nnvia yesterday caused much speculation, as it was known Captain Scott's plans involved a full utilisation of tho summer months in the Antarctic. Tho Terra Nova consequently was not expccted until late in March. There was a very general suggestion that the early return was due to some disaster. Lieutenant Penncll is staying with Mr Kinsey, and he is anxious to remain in seclusion. Mr KinsejV spent an ardous, sleepless night. When seen this morning ho had a pile oi' cablegrams on his desk, and he was unable to see people who were anxious for detail! of the disaster.
