When he had motorod over tho proposed extension to connect with the State line near Marton. he was met by representatives of the adjacent local bodies, who also waited upon him as a deputation. in replying, Mr Herries .said lie would not refuse the connection, but wanted more information regarding increased traffic to compensate for loss to the department through the tramway. He was fully in sympathy with the deputation, and would recommend his colleagues to sanction the connection if ho obtained tho desired information; hut he wanted the railways to benefit the whole colon v rather than juet locallv.
